Analysis on Installed Capacity (India)

Power sector on installed capacity was an interesting exercise. We went to the national power portal (National Power Portal (npp.gov.in) and downloaded the installed capacity reports.

On plotting the same, we go the below bar chart..

Region Wise Installed Capacity

The total of power generation across all regions is 4,28,299 MW. Out of this Coal is still the highest contributor at 49%, followed by renewables (RES) at 31%. This shows a clear attempt to catch up and move towards net zero as newer, cleaner technologies have been commissioned proactively.

Hydro power, we are not sure why they are considered under clean energy.  Other than that, 6% contribution comes from gas and remaining Nuclear, and lignite (again another form of coal) is at 2% each.

Under the Renewables, wind and solar at 33% and 55% respectively, stand out as clear champions for clean energy. However, there is tremendous potential missed out in other technologies like Biofuels and waste from energy.

Growth in installed capacity in, these newer, cleaner technologies can clearly help us to reduce the 49% dependence on coal in domestic power production.
